Underwriter (EMI/Payments)

About the role

Alchemy Group is hiring an experienced Risk Underwriter for its EMI/Payments team in Stockholm. The role acts as a primary gatekeeper for merchant onboarding and risk assessment, analysing acquiring and card merchant applications and checking whether they meet the company's risk policy to limit exposure to application fraud and high-risk processing.

Key responsibilities

• Review new merchant applications quickly and efficiently, and manage pending lists and multiple accounts in the underwriting pipeline.
• Work with internal and external sales agents and merchants to resolve outstanding items in applications.
• Apply knowledge of KYC, card scheme rules, FinCEN beneficial ownership and CDD requirements.
• Analyse consumer credit reports and Mastercard (MATCH) and Visa (VMASS) card systems.
• Evaluate complex financial statements, bank statements and merchant processing statements, identifying chargeback and refund exposure.
• Detect fraudulent applications using internal and external underwriting tools.
• Produce underwriting reports and KPIs for management and communicate findings as business recommendations to senior management.
• Support cross-departmental training and new hires, maintain underwriting policies and procedures, and partner with the Risk department to prevent fraud after approval.

Required profile

• 3-5 years of hands-on underwriting experience in FinTech/Payments.
• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration or a related field.
• Knowledge of business models and risks, including high-risk and card-not-present merchants.
• Strong understanding of KYC requirements.
• Fluent business English, attention to detail, strong communication and problem-solving skills.
