Backend Software Engineer (Rust)

About the role

Rerun is building a multimodal data stack for physical AI, handling large volumes of time‑series and multimodal logs. As a Backend Software Engineer you will work on a cloud‑native analytical database written in Rust, leveraging Apache Arrow to enable high‑performance ingestion, indexing, and querying at petabyte scale.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain core components of a Rust‑based analytical database for multimodal data.
• Scale the system by evolving architecture, distributing work across nodes, and removing performance bottlenecks.
• Design, implement, and operate reliable, observable, and highly scalable data‑intensive services.

Required profile

• 3‑5 years of experience with Rust or strong background in C/C++ and a willingness to adopt Rust.
• Experience building or operating managed database products, data platforms, or high‑traffic systems at scale.
• Proven ability to design and own backend architecture and to scale systems as demand grows.
• Familiarity with distributed‑system trade‑offs such as coordination, consistency, and failure modes.
• Comfort working close to hardware layers and understanding concepts like filtering, indexing, and query execution.
• Strong English communication skills and ability to work in a remote, collaborative team.
