Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Automation

About the role

Based in Flemingsberg, Sweden, you will join Alfa Laval’s Automation Development team, which creates advanced control systems and IoT solutions for core products. As a Senior Electrical Design Engineer you will lead the electrical discipline across multiple projects, designing and testing safe, reliable and cost‑efficient automation systems throughout the product lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

• Design electrical systems and automation control cabinets for machine applications, producing schematics, wiring diagrams and technical documentation.
• Collaborate with mechanical, process and software engineers to ensure seamless integration of electrical designs with overall machine control systems.
• Select and dimension components such as PLCs, HMIs, power supplies, motor starters, contactors, relays, frequency drives, cables and safety devices.
• Perform safety calculations using SISTEMA and ensure compliance with functional safety standards and EN 60204‑1.
• Conduct EMC analysis and mitigation, from early design through component selection and testing.
• Estimate design effort, coordinate electrical design activities, and participate in design reviews and quality assurance.
• Support start‑up, commissioning and troubleshooting both remotely and on‑site, and mentor less‑experienced engineers.

Required profile

• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering or a related field.
• Extensive experience designing electrical systems for industrial automation cabinets.
• Proactive, ownership‑driven attitude with a passion for optimizing products and processes.
• Fluent written and spoken English.

Required skills

• Advanced use of EPLAN P8 (or similar electrical design tool).
• Experience with SISTEMA for safety calculations and functional safety standards.
• Strong knowledge of EMC principles, analysis and mitigation techniques.
• Understanding of EN 60204‑1, CE‑marking requirements and electrical safety regulations.
• Heat‑calculation and thermal‑management expertise for electrical cabinets.
• Hands‑on experience with PLC/HMI programming, frequency drives, motor starters, contactors, relays and cable selection.
