Master's Thesis: Advanced Surface Coating of Complex 3D Ceramic Structures

About the role

Huawei Sweden R&D, in the MPE & Module Engineering Lab in Stockholm, is looking for a motivated master's student to carry out a thesis on advanced surface coating of complex 3D ceramic structures. The project explores and experimentally validates surface engineering processes for ceramic substrates with complex 3D geometries, aiming to achieve ultra-low surface roughness and reliable metallization for next-generation RF applications. Students must be available to start in spring 2027.

Key responsibilities

• Explore conventional and emerging surface treatment approaches, such as plasma-assisted treatments and conformal coating, with emphasis on complex 3D ceramic structures.
• Design and run systematic experiments to develop smoothing strategies for hard-to-reach surfaces (inner walls, deep holes, narrow slots, sharp edges).
• Optimize process parameters to improve surface uniformity, minimize defects and achieve ultra-low surface roughness.
• Evaluate surface morphology, roughness, coating uniformity and structural integrity using AFM, SEM and optical profilometry.
• Correlate processing parameters and 3D geometry with surface quality and propose scalable solutions.

Required profile

• Masters degree in Materials Science, Chemistry or Radio frequency microwave.
• Strong spoken and written English.
• Able to work both in teams and independently, with a high attention to detail.
• Desirable: spray coating and dip coating experience, familiarity with multicultural and international work settings, and lab/testing environment experience.
