Master's Thesis: Contextual Visualization and Extension Marketplace for ABB Crealizer

About the role

AABB is offering a master's thesis on contextual visualization and extension marketplace design for ABB Crealizer, a tool that lets users develop applications for ABB drives. The thesis uses one working Crealizer application as a case study and is worth 30 ECTS. It starts in January–June 2027, lasts about six months, and is based at ABB CRC in Västerås with the option of hybrid work; accommodation in Västerås may be covered.

Key responsibilities

• Explore the selected Crealizer application, its data, audience and visualization value.
• Interview ABB experts and, if possible, external users, then review visualization approaches and define design requirements and testable concepts.
• Build a browser-based proof of concept that turns the application's data into a contextual interactive view, using approved or sanitized data where needed.
• Evaluate and improve the proof of concept with users or domain experts.
• Prototype how the visualization could work as a configurable extension for other applications, and design a preliminary marketplace concept covering discovery, assessment, configuration and sharing of extensions.
• Document findings and present the results to ABB stakeholders, while following ABB's health, safety, information security and research integrity requirements.

Required profile

• Motivated master's student in interaction design, HCI, data visualization, media technology, computer science or a related engineering field.
• Ability to plan user research and turn findings into clear design requirements.
• Interest in turning technical data into clear visualizations; systems thinking and scoping.
• Interest in industrial automation; prior knowledge of drive engineering is an advantage but not required.

Required skills

• Experience building and testing interactive prototypes, including front-end development.
• Use of AI-assisted design or development tools.
