Job description
About the role
This is a master thesis within ABB Robotics' Mechanical Analysis R&D, based in Västerås and reporting to the R&D department or local unit lead. The thesis lasts January to June 2027, is worth 30 ECTS credits and involves one student who spends most of their time on site in Västerås. The project studies how to bring probability and statistics into robot dimensioning so that conservative assumptions are reduced while safety is kept, and failure probabilities are quantified.
Key responsibilities
- Literature study on probabilistic mechanical design and reliability engineering
- Deep dive into ABB Robotics' current in-house dimensioning criteria and load calculation methods
- Develop and test improved methodologies to predict failure probability
- Document findings and recommend how to implement them
Required profile
- Engineering student in Mechanical Engineering, Technical Physics, Mathematics or a similar programme
- Knowledge of mechanical dimensioning and of statistics/probability theory
- Fluent English in speaking and writing, as it is the corporate language
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with the team
Required skills
- Experience with Python, MATLAB or statistical software
- Self-driven, structured and analytical mindset
The position is part of ABB's talent pipeline and not an active job opening; applications are made through the company's online application with CV, academic transcripts and an English cover letter.
