Master Thesis – Motion Control Limited Mechanical Dimensioning

About the role

This is a master thesis project (30 ECTS, one student) in the Mechanical Analysis R&D team of ABB Robotics, based in Västerås from January to June 2027. The Mechanical Analysis team configures manipulators by choosing gears, motors, kinematics and arms and analyses them with FEM. The thesis aims to develop and prove new concepts of mechanical dimensioning, working with the mechanical analysis and motion control teams to explore ways to make predictive maintenance easier, with possible results in next-generation manipulators.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate partly pre-defined concepts of dimensioning
• Collaborate with both the mechanics and the motion control team
• Set up and perform load calculations on manipulators using rigid body simulations
• Verify and compare different ways of dimensioning
• Evaluate arms and machine elements with both FEM and analytical formulas

Required profile

• Engineering student in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Mechanics, Applied and Computational Mathematics or a similar profile
• Basic knowledge of mechanics, finite element method and machine elements
• Fluent English, spoken and written, as it is the corporate language
• Ability to work independently while collaborating with the team
