Job description
About the role
Hitachi Energy is setting up an AI Center of Competence to accelerate engineering productivity, improve design quality and enable intelligent engineering solutions across civil, mechanical, electrical, controls and software disciplines. The AI Lead Engineer is a hands-on leadership role combining technical depth, domain understanding and stakeholder engagement, reporting to the recruiting manager.
Key responsibilities
- Establish the AI Center of Competence from the ground up, defining its mission, operating model, governance framework and technical standards for responsible AI.
- Build partnerships with IT, cybersecurity, legal and engineering leadership to ensure scalable, secure and compliant AI deployment.
- Deliver 2-3 high-impact AI pilots within the first year, such as engineering documentation automation, design knowledge retrieval and controls/code assistance, to shorten engineering cycle time and improve quality.
- Translate engineering pain points into deployable AI solutions by working closely with civil, mechanical, electrical, controls and software teams on their workflows, tools (PLM, CAD, ERP, document systems) and constraints.
- Build AI-ready data foundations through data ownership, metadata standards, lineage tracking and access control, preparing the ground for knowledge graphs and intelligent agents.
- Advise engineering leadership on AI opportunities, risks and ROI, and lead prototyping, experimentation and early deployment.
- Shape the roadmap beyond pilots, including AI-assisted design reviews, engineering copilots and cross-disciplinary knowledge systems.
Required profile
- Strong expertise in applied AI and machine learning, with proven experience designing and deploying AI solutions in enterprise settings, especially Generative AI, LLMs, NLP and document intelligence.
- Experience building production-grade AI systems and familiarity with the full AI lifecycle, including data pipelines, model development, MLOps and deployment on modern cloud platforms.
- Understanding of engineering or industrial environments, such as power systems, mechanical, electrical, controls or automation.
- Experience with complex engineering systems and data, and familiarity with PLM, ERP, CAD/CAE, requirements management or large-scale document management tools.
- Strong stakeholder leadership, entrepreneurial mindset and comfort working in ambiguous situations.
What we offer
- Collective agreement and flexible working time.
- Health care and wellness allowance.
- Career opportunities within Hitachi Energy in Sweden and globally.
- Mentorship during onboarding, training and education.
- Parental leave supplementary compensation and an employee benefit portal with discounts and perks.
