Job description
About the role
This MSc thesis project focuses on improving ABB's Dynafin™ marine propulsion blade profiles using advanced CFD and fluid‑structure interaction simulations. The work will be carried out at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden, from January to June 2027.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct a literature review on hydrodynamic forces and state‑of‑the‑art propeller blade design.
- Perform CFD and FSI simulations of various blade profiles to assess performance.
- Optimize blade geometries for higher efficiency and structural durability.
- Identify critical design features influencing hydrodynamic interactions.
Required profile
- Master’s student in Aerospace, Mechanical, Engineering Physics or related field.
- Strong knowledge of fluid mechanics and fluid‑structure interaction.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
Required skills
- Experience with CFD/FSI simulation tools such as ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, or OpenFOAM.
- Understanding of blade design principles (beneficial but not mandatory).
- Familiarity with reduced‑order models, cavitation modelling, or parametric geometry modelling is a plus.
