Job description
About the role
This thesis internship within ABB Robotics R&D focuses on developing and validating new concepts for mechanical dimensioning of robot manipulators. You will work closely with the Mechanical Analysis and Motion Control teams to improve predictive maintenance and contribute to next‑generation robot designs.
Key responsibilities
- Investigate pre‑defined dimensioning concepts and set up load calculations using rigid‑body simulations.
- Perform FEM analyses and compare them with analytical formulas to evaluate arms and machine elements.
- Collaborate with both the mechanics and motion control teams to verify and refine dimensioning methods.
Required profile
- Engineering student in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Mechanics, Applied/Computational Mathematics or a related field.
- Basic knowledge of mechanics, finite element methods and machine elements.
- Fluent in English (spoken and written) for all documentation.
- Ability to work independently while actively collaborating with the team.
Required skills
- Finite element method (FEM) analysis
- Mechanical analysis of robot manipulators
- Load calculation and rigid‑body simulation
- Understanding of machine elements
