Structural Engineer – Wind‑Powered Propulsion Systems

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join the Innovation team at Oceanbird, developing the next generation of wind‑powered propulsion systems for commercial vessels. The role covers the full product lifecycle, from concept studies through detailed design, testing and verification, ensuring structural integrity of large, complex marine structures.

Key responsibilities

• Perform hand calculations and advanced finite element analyses (linear and non‑linear) to assess structural behaviour.
• Develop, document and validate structural designs from concept to detailed design, collaborating with mechanical, automation, electrical, supply‑chain and quality teams.
• Apply DNV and other classification rules, preparing peer‑reviewed calculation reports.
• Evaluate alternative concepts for performance, manufacturability, weight, complexity and cost.
• Specialise in areas such as fatigue, welding, bolted joints, dynamics, buckling, composite or steel structures, and structural optimisation.
• Communicate risks, assumptions and recommendations to technical and non‑technical stakeholders and support design reviews and testing activities.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of professional experience in structural engineering or a closely related field.
• Master’s degree in structural, mechanical, naval architecture, aerospace or a related discipline.
• Strong understanding of structural mechanics and ability to consider system‑level loads, boundary conditions and failure modes.
• Fluent professional English, both written and spoken.
• Self‑motivated, collaborative and able to take ownership of work.

Required skills

• Finite element analysis, preferably with ANSYS.
• Python programming (plus).
• Design and dimensioning of large steel structures.
• Experience with DNV or other marine classification society standards.
