R&D Engineer

About the role

ABB is looking for an R&D Engineer to join the team developing world‑leading Distributed Control Systems (DCS) for process industries. You will work on complex embedded real‑time systems, delivering robust functionality and ensuring product reliability.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate and resolve complex embedded system issues, including hidden faults and early warning indicators.
• Perform deep‑dive debugging using tools such as JLink/JTAG and Trace32/Lauterbach, and analyse logs and crash dumps.
• Drive quality improvements across the product to ensure stable and reliable performance for customers.
• Work with customer cases to reproduce issues, identify root causes and contribute to long‑term corrective actions.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to secure robust solutions and continuous software and process improvements.

Required profile

• Strong programming skills in C and/or C++.
• Experience with real‑time operating systems, tasks, semaphores and concurrent programming (VxWorks is a merit).
• Analytical mindset with a genuine interest in troubleshooting complex systems.

Required skills

• Ethernet‑based communication, TCP/IP, sockets and industrial protocols such as OPC UA, MMS, PROFIsafe and PROFINET.
• Knowledge of cyber security concepts like secure boot and secure communication.
• Familiarity with AC 800M or similar automation products, Distributed Control Systems and PLC IEC 61131 languages (Structured Text, Function Block Diagrams, Sequential Function Charts).
• Experience with Linux, containers, static code analysis tools (SCA/Klocwork), unit and function testing, XML/JSON parsing.
• Proficiency with version control and CI/CD tools: Git, Visual Studio, TFVC and Azure DevOps pipelines.
