About the role
ABB is seeking a master student to support the development of stable and resilient microgrids through experimental investigations. The thesis will focus on designing and evaluating an energy management system for an experimental microgrid.
Key responsibilities
- Perform a literature survey of control methods for AC microgrids.
- Implement conventional secondary microgrid control functions in a PLC (AC500).
- Develop a communication interface between the PLC and the controller of a grid‑forming converter in the lab setup.
- Formulate and execute a test plan to study network response under various disturbance scenarios.
- Optionally implement advanced secondary control functions such as coordinated load shedding and test them in the laboratory.
Required profile
- Master student in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Energy Technology or a related field.
- Analytical, structured mindset with curiosity for both theory and hands‑on laboratory work.
Required skills
- Knowledge of electric power systems and power‑electronic converters.
- Experience with PLC programming, specifically AC500.
