About the role

This thesis focuses on the AI‑assisted design and FEM‑based development of a spherical electrical machine for robotic actuation. You will work within ABB Robotics Sweden AB in Västerås, creating a parametric design workflow using open‑source tools.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop software routines for geometry generation, meshing, and model parametrisation.
  • Implement automated 3‑D finite‑element analysis using Elmer FEM.
  • Integrate modern AI‑assisted code generation tools to accelerate development and enable rapid evaluation of design variants.

Required profile

  • Highly motivated MSc student in Electrical Power Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechatronics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Engineering or related fields.
  • Solid background in electromagnetics, electrical machines or numerical methods.

Required skills

  • Python programming
  • MATLAB
  • Experience with FEM software (e.g., Elmer) or CAD tools
