Job description
About the role
This Master's thesis project at ABB focuses on simulating fault behavior and protection challenges in medium‑voltage AC distribution networks with high penetration of inverter‑based resources. The work will support future protection strategies for converter‑dominated grids.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct a literature review on fault types, relay protection functions and converter control concepts.
- Model various fault scenarios using Matlab Simulink and/or PSCAD, incorporating different grounding concepts, converter control strategies, and grid topologies.
- Analyse fault currents, voltage profiles and sequence components to evaluate impacts on conventional protection functions.
- Prepare a comprehensive report documenting methodology, findings and conclusions, with optional publication.
Required profile
- Enrolled in a Master’s program in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Self‑motivated, analytical and well‑organized with a strong curiosity for research.
Required skills
- Experience with power system modeling tools (Matlab Simulink, PSCAD).
- Familiarity with control theory and inverter‑based resource concepts.
