Senior L1 Software Engineer – 5G/6G Baseband

About the role

We are seeking a highly skilled L1 Software Engineer to join Huawei’s Sweden Research Center in Stockholm and contribute to the research, architecture, design, and implementation of next‑generation wireless baseband systems. The position focuses on advanced Layer 1 (Physical Layer) software technologies for future wireless RAN systems, translating complex algorithms into efficient real‑time software on heterogeneous platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, optimize and validate high‑performance Layer 1 software for 5G evolution and next‑generation wireless RAN systems.
• Implement real‑time uplink and downlink baseband processing, translating wireless algorithms into efficient code for DSPs, CPUs, ASIC accelerators and other specialized architectures.
• Contribute to software architecture, module interfaces, data flow and execution pipeline design.
• Implement and optimise key PHY functions such as channel estimation, MIMO detection, beamforming, OFDM, LDPC/Polar coding, HARQ and Massive MIMO processing.
• Collaborate with DSP, SoC, compiler and hardware teams to co‑design and optimise workloads for target platforms.

Required profile

• PhD, MSc or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Wireless Communication or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years of industry experience in 4G/5G Layer 1 or wireless baseband development.
• Strong interest in wireless communications and high‑performance computing.
• Self‑driven with solid problem‑solving, communication and collaboration skills.

Required skills

• C/C++ programming.
• Parallel programming and SIMD/vector processing.
• Experience with DSPs, multi‑core ARM/x86 architectures and embedded real‑time systems.
• Memory optimisation, low‑latency software development and performance profiling.
• Knowledge of ASIC, FPGA and accelerator‑based baseband platforms.
• Familiarity with AI/ML techniques for wireless PHY (a plus).
