Master Thesis – Advanced Computational Modeling for Engineering Applications

About the role

This is a master thesis within Mechanical Analysis R&D at ABB Robotics, based in Västerås and running from January to June 2027. The thesis focuses on developing advanced methods at the intersection of numerical simulation and engineering design, with a mathematical orientation involving geometric and computational modeling. It is a single-student project worth 30 ECTS credits, mostly done on site in Västerås, reporting to the R&D department or local unit lead.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out a literature study on relevant methods in simulation and modeling
• Analyze and interpret simulation data and investigate suitable computational approaches
• Develop and test those approaches, implementing them in a numerical environment such as Python or MATLAB
• Evaluate the results, document them and draw conclusions and recommendations

Required profile

• Student in Applied Mathematics or Engineering Physics
• Solid background in geometry, including curves and surfaces, and prior coursework in differential geometry at an advanced undergraduate level
• Fluent English in speaking and writing, as it is the corporate language
• Ability to work independently while collaborating with the team

Required skills

• Numerical analysis and linear algebra
• Scientific programming in Python or MATLAB
